Optional, but worth considering.

Pocket doors are an optional design feature that can elevate the aesthetics of your side-acting fire door installation. While not mandatory, they are often a great way to conceal the pocket reveal for a cleaner, more seamless look. Before proceeding, confirm if local building codes or authorities require pocket doors for your application

Your design, your choice.

The design possibilities for pocket doors are virtually limitless. Whether you prefer a sleek metal finish or a warm wood veneer, the choice is entirely yours. Keep in mind:

  • Material and Thickness: The aggregate thickness of the pocket door and its frame should be factored into the total pocket depth.
  • Customization: The material and finish can be tailored to suit the surrounding architecture.

Secured when closed.

Magnetic catches - Magnetic catches are an excellent option to keep pocket doors securely closed when not in use. They are particularly useful in environments like schools, where access to the pocket area should be restricted. Avoid positive latches, such as hooks or throw bolts, as these can interfere with the fire door’s operation.

Essential criteria for pocket door design.

Stay Open, Stay Safe

  • Pocket doors must remain open when the fire door is deploying. To achieve this:
  • Reverse Spring-Loaded Hinges: These hinges hold the pocket doors open and out of the way during deployment, preventing any obstructions.

Hinges: Swing and Space

  • Pocket doors must be side-hinged and capable of swinging a full 180 degrees. When fully open, they should not encroach on the clear width of the pocket, ensuring unobstructed deployment of the fire door.

Ease of Operation

  • Design pocket doors that require less than 20 pounds of lateral force to operate. This ensures accessibility and ease of use for all building occupants.

Finishing Touches

Frame or Frameless? A door frame isn’t a necessity but can add a polished look to your design. For a minimalist approach, consider a frameless design. This leaves only two slight reveals at the door edges, creating a nearly invisible pocket door installation.
